THE MAN OF FEW WORDS

the man of few words
speaks volumes with his smile
as he ushers me
gently to a meal he's set out
for me at the long outdoor table

I'd hoped to make this
a take-out meal, my need to be alone
intense as always,
but this stranger's accommodating
and the food very nicely presented

okay, I say, and sit,
it also helps that he then steps away,
into the shadows
and that there's only one other
diner "al fresco," and she's distant

it's quite odd to be
the focus of generosity one
hasn't earned, to be
treated so well simply out of
a stranger's own desire to do so
