THERE'S NO WAY

there's no way this show's ready to go on,
under-rehearsed and with that young,
newbie director at the helm, and so
I quit the cast, though I do wish I
were better able to tolerate the anxiety
all this generates and therefore stay

there's also no way I can haul out these
huge bags of trash at this point, I've neither
the time nor the energy and my arthritic
knees are acting up terribly, and so I crowd
the bags into a dresser's bottom drawer,
thinking to drag them one by one
to the distant garbage bins later

and there's no way I can (much less should)
finish this humongous bag of M&M's
right now, even though I want to very much;
maybe I'll store them with the trash,
but, no, they'll get contaminated there,
and so I'll have to hold their temptation
as I struggle with what to do about them

but since there's no dress rehearsal for life,
and there's no getting rid of garbage without
painful effort, and there's no way
to safely hold on to what's not good for you
to begin with, then

why am I so hot and bothered? none of this
can be changed and my upset only makes
an irresistible craving for more of sugar's
numbing all the more likely
