THE LAST OPENING UP

an old Cat Steven's song says:
the first cut is the deepest

but after a lifetime of deep slices,
near misses, and nicks
I disagree

this one, that may very well be
the last opening up
my old heart has left in it,
is the deepest

even the protecting ribs
receive long scratches
and wobble woefully
at each repeated cut
that like a sad heart beat
repeats the reality:

it never was
it never will be
