TALKING TRASH

maybe, she thinks, if she angles
more toward the light
and smiles as if to herself
it will show her decent face
and sincere intent to good effect
in this crowded noisy space

ah! was that man's appreciative comment
as she passed by about the slope of her butt
or maybe even her confident demeanor?

the garbage she's carting starts to weigh heavy
and just as she wonders where
she should leave her trash for pick up
in this cavernous room,
a young man starts to lecture her

albeit a friendly lecture, meant to inform
(and also impress with the breadth
of his knowledge) about where the recycle
bins are and when they're open for filling
(down the street, and in a few minutes,
respectively), and about the history
and necessity of recycling

'twas it ever thus, she thinks,
she yearns to be noticed for what's attractive
about her, and all he focuses on is trash


[narrative on a dream of 12-5-15. I'm the one who tends to focus on her own "trash." I'm also the one who needs to stop being so impressed with my "ability" to identify and understand trash, mine or anyone else's. There's a whole lot more to each one of us than garbage.
