THIS OLD SACK, (non-dream based) poem by Patricia Kelly

THIS OLD SACK

lugging around this battered
old sack clutching it to her
breast like a perverse
Santa gifting others with
dollops of childishness saccharine

well-meaning white lies smiles
like exotic dancer’s veils
draping anger and fear in
glittering displays of denial she’s
the last to see through

this ever-filling bottomless
bag weighing her down in
ancient pretense long since
become an endlessly painful
bore so why doesn’t she

just drop it or does
the fear of holding nothing
in her fervid embrace repel
her more than this disfiguring
old sack of artifice?
