SOLITARY (photo) & WHAT.YOU.DO. (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

WHAT.YOU.DO.

is it better never to have known the enemy’s name,
or that it’s the motivating power beneath just about
everything: and in this most cynical of times one might
even argue for deleting “just about”

for the only energy around at all now (in tsunamis
of diminishing returns) is the twisting of desire
when it becomes intolerable, and lurid lack takes
the bit in its teeth, racing off over the sharp-edged
ship wrecks and cacophonous skeletons of ancient
territory grasping after what never has been
granted or obtained (or stolen outright),
and never will be

yes, there’s that small, vaguely human voice that will
ultimately whisper (trembling as if at its temerity
in challenging history), while habituation blows
its fragile words away as soon as they appear:

Accept this all.
Accept even this unacceptance.

It’s.what.
you.do.
