ON PLAYING FOOTSIE

that man I have quite a crush on, and I, hang around
together; we're sitting on the floor and both of my feet are
beneath his somehow; after a time I realize one of mine
is stuck to one of his by the toe area of my black sock;
we laugh as he tries to disengage our feet, while I revel
silently in not only letting someone try to help me but,
even more so, in being physically this close to him
and the focus of his attention; but there's also an itchy
urge to reach past him and rip that dang sock loose to end
the niggling worry I'm making a damn fool of myself over
a man, yet one more time; but I let the situation advance
at its own rate, giving this odd encounter a chance
to develop as it will; then I see that he's growing younger
and more handsome by the second, and that any chance
this old, arthritic lady might have had with him
is now slimmer than the last slice of a sickle moon;
what a pickle! but I refuse to toss in the towel:
I'm enjoying his sensual wrestling
with our socked feet, way too much
