LOSERS

why always having
to give it up, let it go,
and the worst of all,
return it as it was only
a short-term loan to begin with

now, I don't want you
to think I believe I'm alone
in this on-going
give-back, I do see the startled
faces of newly bereft folk

even as I already grieve the golden tome
just lifted from my reluctantly open hands

one might think we'd ease each other's pain with compassion
but mostly we simply go on, denying we're losers
