ON PIONEERING

did I read somewhere
or simply dream it, long ago,
that an emotion
(at its most basic) is saying “Don’t just
stand (or sit or lie) there, do something!”

that an emotion,
like each of these milling dream colors,
rises or bursts in us,
a pioneer agitating at the locked gates
of the fortresses we make of our selves

“Come,” it says, pounding
like a beating heart on the loose,
“do you see where I’m
going? Do you know what you’re rejecting
if you don’t look my color in the face?”


[three tanka on a dream of 6-10-19. I’ve mentioned here many times how infrequently I dream in color. And, even when I do, it’s usually only of one color. Last night's dreams – as far as I recall – were the most color-loaded ones I’ve ever had. So much so that I don't recall any other details of those dreams. Just the visuals of color, color, color.
