THE BOOK

there's no way I can
carry all these books on my
return journey home
maybe I should ship them ahead,
they were free, and shipping's cheap

ah yes, here's that book
I thought I gave away
a long time ago,
but its fantasy story
seems a lot shorter now

sadly, the illustrations still leave much to be desired,
not like the cover that delights me just as it used to

now, this chapter ... how is it one makes one's wish?
now I recall: speak to the poorly drawn fluffy cloud,

out of which will come
a yellow cartoon lion ...
and here's that 'toon now
iterating what I knew it would
"Did you really think you'd get that wish?"

and I also know why the lion's now looking back
into the cloud: to request support for this denial

but I don't care to stay around for rejection
by additional denizens of this short fantasy

is it me or a wind that's sighing
I shut this old, all too familiar book
