THE GAP

the tall detective
almost literally pins me to
the wall with questions
it seems my brother's been dealing
in illegal substances

"Maybe a kilo..."
he says, and they think he's headed
for Hawaii, where his
platonic girlfriend hails from,
hoping to mooch off her family

none of this surprises me, though I remind
myself that he's not been convicted yet

and that the gap between what's said about someone
and what they've really done can be wider than the Pacific


[two tanka with two two-liners on a dream of 9-21-15. This was my deceased brother. I had no awareness of his death in the dream. He was just my brother, alive. I will do more thinking on why my dreaming mind chose him as the image through which to look at the sticky ball of wax made of assumptions, misperceptions, accusations, and gossip.
