BRUSHING DARKNESS (photo) & DANG IT ALL (dream narrative/monologue) by Roswila

DANG IT ALL

"Dang it all! It's the same old picture,"
she announces sotto voce as if someone
were listening, "how did that happen?
I used different colors, new and oddly
shaped brushes, a uniquely rough
and patterned canvas and I even
let go of my usual tight control,
following the more subtle urges
that came down my fingers, but
it's the same old painting!"

"That's it, I'm done trying..."
she grabs a brush and slaps a nondescript
color paint down the surface of the large
irritating abstract before her in two
wide swaths, obliterating the all too
familiar shapes and careening colors
as if slapping paint on a wall

the heft of the big brush and the heat
of concentration calm her down

"Ah well," she murmurs
"I'll just have to start over
for the gazillionth time ... what else
has this old lady got left to do
at this end of life?
Besides, there's always a chance
something new will emerge
this time"

For all the carping in this dream I have a lot to be grateful for this day. Not the least of which being the opportunity to keep trying at whatever calls me to do so.]
