NO UNDERSTANDING

there may be thousands
of miles between
and years of changes,
but nothing's truly new at all:
the same eyes, the same ears
perceive and paste the same stifling
patterns onto the world again and again
yet chances for freshness still rise
with every breath and rest
between systole and diastole,
interstices winking into
and out of existence
beneath the radar of labels,
begging no understanding
nor even any question
